short version, several groups are attempting reverse engineer various incarnations of SWG for self run servers. so far they have made a fair bit of progress but are far from a working game. Many people, myself included, have serious concerns that even if they get the coding and technology right, they will run afoul of various legal issues. Supposedly, SOE has given relinquished the rights to the use of pre nge coding, but even if they did, Lucas has the trademark on anything Star Wars. It is my opinion that the technological hurdles are immense between the coding and the infrastruture of servers. Add to that the legal issues and wouldn't bet on this happening. Anything is possible, I just don't think it is likely. That doesn't even touch the issues regarding the people running the servers.

So basically someone is trying to launch their own server with the old version of SWG. Is that correct?

That's correct. Several groups are racing to get the first "original" SWG up and running. Ave is right, though...the copyright laws will almost surely shut down the "original" SWG servers as soon as they're up. Hopefully they'll stay under the radar long enough for some classic SWG gaming.
